Did you know you can do this with SQL?!
Today SQL is not only used for ad-hoc queries, but replaces more and more native I/O and must be used in composition with all programming languages other than RPG and COBOL. Moving business logic into data base is one of the main goals when we talk about application modernization. The first step for realizing this goal is the ultimate use of the SQL SELECT statement which may be much more powerful than you can imagine.
In this way I want to show you several more, less or even unknown functions and features and demonstrate how, to use them. For example formatting numeric values, determining the first Monday in a month, accessing IFS files and web-services … and more.
Web Services only with SQL
In a modern world, information gets exchanged over the web. A request is send and an answer is returned. We do not care where the data is located.
On IBM i most data is stored within the relational database, Db2 for i and Data access occurs with native I/O or SQL. As far as good … but what if we could receive the request and provide the data directly by executing a SQL statement? Wouldn’t that be great?
With Release 7.4 the HTTP Web Administration GUI interface can now be used for deploying SQL Statements as REST APIs while the IBM Db2 acts as RESTful service provider.
NOTE: Please be mindful of the time change for this month's meeting.
